How to make money from Spring Cleaning

There is nothing like an overdue spring clean to give your home that refreshing feeling. It’s always nice to start a new season with a clean slate, but it’s even better to start it with extra money in your wallet. De-clutter and make money at the same time. It’s a win-win situation.

Here are the types of items you can sell or trade in to clear out the clutter and fill up your wallet:

Jewellery

spring cleaning jewellery

This is where you can make the most money, so if you’re motivated to start your spring cleaning with plenty of momentum, start with your jewellery box.

Anything from old, broken necklaces to worn out rings and watches can fetch you a good price in stores. You get to clean out your home and recycle your jewellery for cash to spend on anything you want. You can even trade it in for different jewellery if anything catches your eye.

Old phones and tablets

old phones and tablets

Another great area to raise a considerable amount of cash quickly. We’ve all been there, all excited to get the latest handset only to be told an even newer version is being released a few months down the line. Not only does it reduce the value of your current phone, but it also encourages you to upgrade to a newer model leaving it behind in a drawer to collect dust.

If you have no use for it, you might as well sell it and get quick cash. You can also use this method if you want to get out of being tied down to a lengthy contract. Just sell your current phone and use the cash towards purchasing a newer model.

The same think applies to any old tablets you may bought. That shiny iPad you excitingly got a few years ago isn’t as fast as it used to be. It slows down with every new update, apps become incompatible, and the screen gets duller every year. If at this point its just an oversized kindle, then it’s time to back up your data and sell it off for a newer one.

Speakers and Amplifiers

speakers and amplifiers

Selling unused speakers and amplifiers are another good way to make quick cash. They often get cast away to the corners of the house where they are forgotten about. Sometimes even portable speakers are left in a drawer or in their box where they are forgotten about. If they’re collecting more dust than they are being used, then it’s probably time to sell them on.

Amplifiers are always a hot item to sell off, whether you’ve stopped playing or need a bigger amp then you can trade them in our stores where we often stock a wide selection of different products.

Games and DVD’s

games and dvds

Long gone are the days of cassette tapes and VHS players. Everything is instant or a digital download now, to the point where DVD’s and games are becoming as archaic as casettes. With Netflix and Amazon available to most people.

Games are being directly downloaded to your consoles and movies are available on Netflix and Amazon.

There is still a special place for buying the physical copies for having something to hold on to, but it’s time to let go. Have a look through your disc collection and see what you don’t use anymore or what’s available online. Might as well sell it off and get some extra cash and free up some space at the same time.

Ready to sell

Pop down to your local Cash & Cheque Express store with all of your unnecessary items. Our friendly team are guaranteed to give you a great service and help you earn some quick cash this spring.

What do the hallmark symbols on gold mean

Gold ring

When buying or selling jewellery, whether it is gold, silver, or platinum, it is important to look at the symbols on it. These symbols, known as hallmarks, are a way of showing the content of your jewellery or gold. Whether it’s a gold bracelet, a ring, or a necklace, if you look close enough you will find hallmarks on it.

Here is an easy breakdown of what these symbols on your gold or jewellery actually mean:

Town Marks

Town Marks

Let’s start nice and easy. These various symbols show where your gold or jewellery was tested and marked. Currently, there are four Assay Offices in the UK in: London, Edinburgh, Birmingham, and Sheffield.

Traditional Finesse Symbols

Traditional Finesse Symbols

The traditional finesse symbols are optional to include as they are not specific enough to the purity of the metal. However, they are recognised and iconic to have on your jewellery.

Metal and Finesse Mark

Metal and finesse mark

This is a more specific marker showing the purity of your gold or precious metal. You have most likely heard about different “carats” of gold. A higher carat means the gold or jewellery is purer and is worth more money. As you can see in the gold section, the higher the finesse mark the higher the carat value.

Makers Mark

AB

The Maker’s mark is one of the three compulsory symbols to hallmark jewellery. This mark always has at least two letters and is inside of a shape. Different countries have different marks, but All UK maker marks are unique to each jeweller. For example S&W stands for Slade & Woolf.

It’s illegal to sell or describe Gold or jewellery that is not hallmarked

Illegal to sell

In the UK it is a criminal act to describe or sell gold, silver, platinum or palladium that is not hallmarked. Whenever choosing to buy jewellery, always make sure there is a hallmark to certify it is authentic. However, there are cases where your gold or jewellery doesn’t weigh enough it does not need to be hallmarked. Silver under 7.78 grams, palladium under 1.0 gram, gold under 1. 0 gram, and platinum under 0.5 grams do not need a hallmark. Read about the 1973 Hallmarking Act here
